Starting off with a bang thanks to a crushing performance by "The Avengers" at the box office, the summer 2012 movie season now finds itself coming to close on a less than stellar note.
Faring only slightly better than last weekend's top grossing total of $13.5 million, "The Possession" is on track to take the Labor Day weekend (August 31-September 3) top spot - as the Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Kyra Sedgwick starring Lionsgate horror picture's $5.7 million opening day puts it on pace for an estimated four-day total of $20.5 million.
Despite boasting an all-star cast including Shia LaBeouf, Jessica Chastain and Mia Wasikowska, fellow cinema newcomer "Lawless" failed to pique the public's interest, as well, with the John Hillcoat directed drama turning out a $2.6 million Friday while lined up to finish the holiday weekend at a paltry $12.4 million.
Filling out the top five at the box office in forecasted totals are the Sylvester Stallone , Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jason Statham led action caper "The Expendables 2" ($12 million), followed by the Tony Gilroy directed action/adventure film "The Bourne Legacy" ($9.5 million) and LAIKA's 3D stop-motion comedy thriller "ParaNorman" ($10 million).
